Gasoline-electric Hybrid Technology Gains Momentum At Fords

Gasoline-electric hybrid technology continues to gain momentum and Ford Motor Company researchers are working hard to advance innovative hybrid solutions to address consumer interest. Ford unveiled a hydrogen-fueled, battery-powered plug-in Ford Edge at the 2007 Washington (D.C.) Auto Show in January.

Unveiling the hybrid Edge in Washington helped Ford showcase the vehicle and its technology in front of leading government officials and legislators, an important audience as Congress begins working under new leadership.

"Besides the public, the audience in Washington includes the people in charge of energy and clean air policy so this is very much a showplace for exhibiting what Ford technology can do in the future," said Scott Staley, Ford's chief engineer for Hybrid and Fuel Cell Technology Development.

Edge's road to launch rocky

If there was ever a launch that Ford Motor Co. needed to go off without a hitch, it was the rollout of its two new crossovers: the Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX. But a number of minor issues have conspired to delay shipments of the vehicles to some dealers, particularly in rural areas.

According to the company, about 10 percent of Ford dealers still have not received their first Edges, though it says all of them will receive their initial allotment by the end of this month. Smaller Lincoln dealers will have to wait longer for their MKXs, as the company has decided to build up inventories at high-volume dealers in major metropolitan areas first.

The Edge's rocky ride to market was supposed to begin last November. However, last-minute quality issues and concerns about some suppliers prompted Ford to delay that until late December to ensure a smooth launch.

Ford Fusion, Edge Get Top Crash Test Scores

WASHINGTON -- The 2007 Ford Fusion midsize sedan and the 2007 Ford Edge sport utility vehicle received top scores in front- and side-impact crash testing by the insurance industry.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said Monday that the Edge, which has the same underpinnings as the Lincoln MKX, also earned its top rating for rear crash protection. "The criteria to win Top Safety Pick are tough," said Institute President Adrian Lund. "This award is intended to drive continued safety improvements such as the highest crash test ratings and the rapid addition of electronic stability control as standard equipment. Recognizing the winners also helps consumers distinguish vehicles with the best overall ratings without having to sort through multiple crash test results." .
